Melvin Schlamm, age 96, displayed acts of heroism on the days following the Normandy Landings, otherwise known as D-Day, as he strategized and instigated the direction of artillery fire to aid in the escape of a division of the 94th infantry. He received a Silver Star for his gallantry in action, and proudly wears his army cap and jacket as he visits Dr. William Freeman at Jacobs Retina Center and Shiley Eye Center (pictured in the left). With Dr. Freeman and Mr Schlamm is Dr Alexandra Warter. Melvin recently received a notification from the City of San Diego that he is the last San Diegan survivor of D day which marked the beginning of the defeat of the Nazis in Europe and the end of World War II.
Doris Cramer, age 100, celebrated her centennial anniversary at Jacobs Retina Center with Dr. William Freeman and fellow staff. She has been a patient of Dr. Freeman for the past 15 years and has been treated for Wet Advanced Macular Degeneration. As Ms. Cramer returned to receive treatments over the past few years, she built a strong connection with him through trust and friendship. Her vision has been retained through careful management and treatment of her Macular Degeneration
